Opening ceremony for the new addition to the Frazer Theatre

THE NEW-look Frazer Theatre in Knaresborough officially opened its doors to the public with a special opening celebration.

A £200,000 plus fund-raising project by owners of the theatre, the Knaresborough Players, has seen the completion of the first phase of the development and refurbishment of the town centre theatre.

The opening ceremony was attended by guest speaker, David Nobbs, well known author of the Reginald Perrin series.

Mr Nobbs was delighted to perform the official unveiling of the plaque at the event attended also by the Mayors of Knaresborough and Harrogate, Coun. Mavis Clemmitt and Coun. Pat Jones respectively and their consorts, together with representatives of financial sponsors of the theatre project.

However, the evening belonged to Chairperson of the Knaresborough Players, Shirley Holden who, said Vice Chair, David Crosthwaite, had spearheaded the entire project and worked tirelessly to ensure it came to fruition.

She deservedly received a standing ovation from guests and in thanking and acknowledging Shirley’s part in the fund-raising, David said: “We all recognise Shirley’s supreme achievement in leading this initiative.“The extension to the Frazer Theatre has been a huge achievement for arts provision in our local community. There is still work in progress as much further refurbishment work still remains before the Frazer becomes a jewel in Knaresborough's crown. However, we feel confident of continued support from the local community.”

A statuette designed by local sculptress, Barbara Asquith was also presented to Shirley in recognition of her efforts and Shirley thanked all the sponsors and those in the local community who had supported the project.

During the evening, guests were also treated to a presentation of the award-winning play, ‘Cat and Mouse’ written by local playwright, Bernie Crosthwaite, featuring young actresses Bethany Yates and Nikki Liversedge.

An evening buffet was prepared by members of the Players and a celebratory cake made by Carole Usher enjoyed by all.

The extension built at the back of the auditorium includes a new entrance foyer, new kitchen, facilities for the disabled including toilets and lift, a large function room and new lighting studio on the first floor and also a large storage area at the top of the building for costumes and props.
