The Demeter

A strange cargo...a violent wreck...the enduring mystery of a ships last voyage

August 1895. When a ship is wrecked in mysterious circumstances in Whitby harbour, a gruesome discovery on board gives rise to two conflicting  theories as to what happened during that last ill fated voyage of cargo ship “Demeter”

Inspired by myth, superstition, historical fact and Gothic fiction and drawing on accepted schools of scientific and spiritual thought of the day, the play focuses on the (fictional) voyage of The Demeter as she sails from Varna to Whitby and the possible explanations as to the cause of the tragedy.

This new play by Halifax based writer Berni Bertola is the first play to be produced through the Icabod  D-Visions development project.
